The French Horn

I am currently working on some boards which will become one large pub sign.

Dipping my toe into the world of pub signage has been fascinating, there is some great illustration out there & equally some poor.

Working closely with the lovely Miss Greenfield & Mr Woodvine, publicans of The French Horn, we devised a little mouse character to welcome you inside.

Murals or Canvas

Childrens World map painted on canvas, with detailed animals illustrationsHand painted wardrobe in childs room full of favourite charaters like Thomas the Tank & Bob the Builder

If you are looking for some wall art or a mural for your childrens nursery a canvas can be a good way to start. Any size or design can be hand painted to complement your home decor.

You can play around with where to place it and take it with you if you move. It is an especially good choice if you are renting.

A mural can be small and quiet…a little mouse and mousehole in the corner or a whole themed room that totally transports you into another dimension.

I say the bolder the better..well of course I would! Obviously budget will play a role in your final choice but just because a canvas may be smaller than painting a whole wall, don’t be tricked into thinking less time will be spent on it. A high quality canvas must be stretched & primed before work even begins & you must transport it at the end. You also have to let the paint dry & the canvas rest. When painting a room you can benefit from the space; whilst waiting for an area to dry you can go work on another wall. Murals can also be painted over doors, radiators & furniture.

It can be more exciting to reveal a finished canvas; depending on how much contact you have during the process, you get a real “wow’ unveiling. Not to say a room doesn’t have that “wow’ factor, indeed it does but the client usually gets to sees it moving on everyday.

All wall art whether hanging or painted directly onto the wall gives immeasurable pleasure to the viewer old & young. Commissioning artwork allows you to have as much involvement as possible, be part of the process and the final artwork.

I hope you feel confident creating one of a kind rooms & decor for your home.

Dusty, Rusty & Twig

Here’s a few pics of an enchanted WOODLAND MURAL, hand painted directly onto the nursery walls.
It is the type of thing I dreamt about as a child…a magical wood with animals going about their business, little doors & houses in the trees. As you can imagine Enid Blyton’s The Faraway Tree was a favourite of mine growing up.
Lots of nods to inspiring childrens illustration like Molly Brett, Beatrix Potter, Mabel Lucie Atwell, Cicely M.Barker who all captured the wonder & possibilities of living amongst the woodland animals, dancing fairies & beautiful wildlife.
Dusty, Rusty & Twig are the names of baby foxes asleep in their den at the bottom of the wall

Hand painted nursery mural makes a kids room a magical world of possibilities, encourages looking & talking, may feature favourite characters from childrens fairy stories, illstrations from loved books & games. Styling and planning a nursery is an exciting adventure for any parent especially when it invoves a Magical mural

Old Rectory

I am lucky enough to live near the Old Rectory in Bletchingley. A Georgian manor house with great topiary in the garden & some inspiring Trompe l’oeil inside.

The house & garden is often used as a film location, it looks beautiful both in the Summer & Winter.  It has a real fairy tale quality to it.

Everything turned out Rosie

Competition winner Patricia Edwards now has her hand painted & framed name sign.

We went with a girlie, ballet theme and of course there had to be a rose in Rosie.

I think it’s safe to say we are all pleased with the results.

Congratulations once more Patricia!

Passionate about paper

Not only do I like to draw & paint on all sorts of paper, I am also obsessed with wallpaper.

This stems back to childhood trips to London, where every inch of the walls of The Fountain room at Fortnum & Masons and The Ritz were covered in rich pattern and pictures.

Like the Prince Regent, Chinoiserie has always been a firm favourite and no one does it as well as De Gourney and Fromental.

Thanks to the digital age we can replicate a wealth of colours and intricate patterns at a fraction of the time and cost. It in no way diminishes the power of  hand painted and embroidered silk papers.

For example I have recently hung this John Lewis paper, which looks fabulous, reflecting golden light all around the room. A real nod to the golden silks of the Ming Dynasty.

So I get quite a few requests to hang wallpaper by friends and family and I never refuse… here are a few

But my favourite room in the house to go mad with bold prints is definitely the smallest room. Cloak rooms can take a busy design, just be brave! We decided not to fight the grey suite in this one and got a paper to go with it.

Inspired by Klimt…

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved the work of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918)

His most familiar work ‘The Kiss’ 1908, from his Golden Period, is just one of many works showing what a great innovator he was…

His ability to cloak a portrait or landscape in a rich kaleidoscope of colour and interwoven patterns of gold & silver, mosaics, ornamental motifs, mythical birds, flowers or swirls is unmistakable. I am constantly drawn back to his work, again and again. I find it mesmerizing.

My recent Tree canvas was commissioned from specific photos but inspired none the less by ‘Birch Wood’. Not so much in composition but paint application.

A more conscious nod to his work and a little more fun was the Magic Tree Mural.

In true Klimt style gold leaf was added and some Swarovski crystals were also added to embellish the fruits on the tree.

Pronunciation: /ɪˌmadʒɪˈneɪʃ(ə)n/

A creation of the mind; especially: an idealized or poetic creation.

I like to think I can create a fantasy environment that helps build children’s imaginations. From sweeping scenes to little painted elements here and there, whatever your child can dream, I work to bring to life.
